gutenberg Printer
In the computer centre hall there is an HP LaserJet 600 M603 printer available for all staff of the Department of Mathematics. The printer is named after the inventor of the printing press, Gutenberg.
The printer is supervised directly by our Scientific Computing Centre:
for any problems, please DO NOT contact Polo2 who supervise the print server and other printers.
Please ask any member of the Operating Committee who deal with the technical aspect of our
Scientific Computing Centre, (for example Carminati, Caboara, Steffè).
The gutenberg printer has many interesting functions:
- If your computer is on the local network 131.114.10.x, then from your browser, by visiting http://gutenberg.cs.dm.unipi.it
(not visible from outside the LAN of the building) you can check the printer status and, in particular, see
if there is enough toner and/or paper.
There is only paper in Tray 2, the others are not used.
- You can print a pdf file directly without having to configure anything on your computer:
open your browser and go to http://gutenberg.cs.dm.unipi.it/, and go to the link Print (or Stampa);
select the file with «Browse...» (or «select document» ) and open it with « Open » (or «select») and finally click on Print (or Stampa)
and your file will be printed on Gutenberg.
NB: send only pdf files !!!
- If you have a pdf file on a pen drive you can print the file directly on Gutenberg without having to use a computer
Just go into the Computer Centre hall, find the Gutenberg printer,
press the OK button
press the down arrow, select the menu retrieve from USB
when asked insert the USB pen drive in the appropriate slot
with the up and down arrows select the pdf file to be printed and select OK
select the number of copies and OK
wait for printing to finish before removing the pen drive !!!
NB: removing the pen drive inappropriately you risk losing files and the i printer blocks !!!
- If you want you can download a short video that shows you what to do !
not all pen drives are recognised by the printer, try it first !
- Finally, you can set up your computer to print directly to the printer gutenberg as a network printer.
If the operative system isn't recent enough you will just have to select a "generic postscript" printer.
You must remember to configure the paper as A4 and not the American format Letter which is the default format: if you don't do this, the printer will stop and wait for someone to put American paper in or just to press OK to continue!
NB: if possibile use the new XEROX photocopiers: the toner is included in a contract paid by the Department while the other printers are paid separately.
